Week 4 & Creative Outdoors

Steve Scott

This week (Week 4) we asked Kasey, one of our college camp counselors, to write a special blog to share about one of our newest camps -- Creative Outdoors! Before we get to Kasey's story, I would like to quickly highlight the other camps we offered this week.

In the morning we had Camp .22 and another new camp, Game On! Both camps were completely full making for some very high-energy mornings. In the afternoon we had Introduction to Archery and Creative Outdoors. These camps were also very full. We got to meet so many new campers this week and see some campers that we haven't seen in so long! It was an exciting week with so many new experiences.

Speaking of new experiences, here is Kasey's experience with our brand new camp, Creative Outdoors:

While I have enjoyed working COUNTLESS incredibly fun camps over the past three summers at On Target, our first ever Creative Outdoors camp was by far my favorite. During this amazing week spent outdoors, campers will be spending majority of their time in God’s creation, while simultaneously creating masterpieces of their own. We do various activities in this camp including creating nature journals in which campers will take notes on our daily devotions, string art on slabs of wood, one of a kind paintings done with brushes made in nature, and so many other fun crafts! Creative outdoors is enjoyable for boys and girls of all ages, especially since God created this world for all of us! The OTO staff and I are looking forward for campers to grow and develop this new camp with us!!!!

Creative Outdoors is being offered again in Week 6 (July 23 - 26th) from 1 - 4 PM. Join us to make some awesome crafts, like paintball art, DIY camo shirts, nature paintings, survival tools and so much more. Register now by following this link

See you soon!

Jr. Adventure Camp

Steve Scott

Jr. Adventure Camp is a one-day camp for kids ages 5 - 7. It is an opportunity to try archery, fishing, paintball, and spend time in the great outdoors for the kids who are not old enough or not quite ready to take on a full week of camp. As we were planning camps this year, this was just an idea to engage more students and on June 21, our idea became a reality!

In the first Jr. Adventure Camp we had nine young campers bravely join us for a morning of fun.

The camp is open to girls and boys but in this camp we had an awesome group of all boys! After making some cool name tags, campers learned how to shoot archery. The camp counselors were so impressed by how quickly the boys learned archery! They were popping balloons in no time. After we shot archery, campers learned about fishing. Each camper got a fishing pole and headed out to the pond with their camp counselors. The fish weren't biting but we still had a fun time getting to know each other by telling stories and silly jokes to one another. After fishing, we took a quick snack break before the final activity of the day. The last activity was a scavenger hunt. Kids had to find colorful flowers, cool leaves, and had to high five all of the other campers! With the objects found in the scavenger hunt, campers made a light catcher to take home with them.

Campers and camp counselors had a blast in this camp! We have two more Jr. Adventure Camps scheduled for this summer and we are planning different activities for each camp so that it will be so much fun every time we have camp even if we see some familiar faces!

I know that we are so excited for the next one and we hope to see your amazing little ones at camp! We are offering this day camp on July 19th (9 AM- Noon) and August 2nd (9 AM - Noon) so get registered today!

See you soon!

Week Three Already?

Steve Scott

We can't believe that week three has come to an end already! This summer is going by quickly as we are getting to spend our days getting to know your awesome kids. It's fun to watch kids come alive as they catch their first fish, hit their first bullseye, or start a fire on their own. The smile that lights up their faces is such a great moment!

This week, we had four camps. In the morning we had Into the Wild: Girls where campers learned to start fires, fish without a fishing pole, make a compass, and so much more. They had a camp-in on Wednesday night. They played Exploding Kittens and watched Up! In the morning, they made chocolate chip pancakes for breakfast and evaluated the shelters they would have slept in if the weather would have cooperated. We also had our biggest Fish On! camp to date in the morning. We had 24 fishermen and women this week! In fishing camp, campers spent lots of time learning fishing knots, casting, and of course, fishing. On Wednesday, campers played sharks and minnows and made the best of a rainy day. Campers also learned how to filet a fish and got to eat some really tasty catfish and walleye!

In the afternoon we had Basic Marksmanship camp. This week campers learned so much about safety that they could probably tell you the rules in their sleep! They played lots of games to show their improvement over the days. It is always so fun to see them leave with their target each day because their shots keep getting closer and closer to the bullseye. We also had Intermediate Archery in the afternoon. This camp was packed with games and challenges. They did a 3D animal shoot, mystery shoot, archery corn hole, and so much more! It was a week full of fun and prizes that helped campers enhance their archery skills.

We will be taking a break from camps next week to celebrate the 4th of July. We are building a float for the Canfield parade so make sure you come see us in the parade at 10 AM!

We are looking forward to seeing you all in two weeks for Week 4 of camps! The camps that are coming up are Camp .22, Game On!, Introduction to Archery, and Creative Outdoors. These camps still have room so grab your friends and register your kids today!

We are so grateful for your continued support in our ministry,

Thank you and have a blessed day (and 4th of July)!

Week two: Guns, Bows, and the Great Outdoors!

Steve Scott

Wow, did week one go fast! As we welcomed kids to camp during week two we began to see 'familiar faces' as some of the kids continue to come back each week. It always brings a smile to our faces to see the kids who repeat camps and who come back frequently, as it shows us that the work we are doing is having an impact in the lives of the kids. We also love meeting new campers because that is a sign that the ministry is growing.

This week in camps we had Camp .22, Introduction to Archery, and Into the Wild-Boys. In Camp .22, the kids used two different types sights, iron sights, and scopes. They also learned how to shoot in different shooting positions such as bench-rest, seated, and prone (laying down). In Into the Wild-Boys, the kids learned how to make a fire with limited resources, they also learned how to make shelter with just a few feet of para-cord and a couple of tarps. Finally, in Introduction to Archery, the kids have learned to shoot a bow and how to make their form and shots be the best that they can be. They shot for money, candy, and got to play archery corn-hole.

For the first time, we offered a Junior Adventure Camp for students five to seven years old. In this camp, junior campers learned how to shoot archery, fish, and used their supplies from the scavenger hunt to make a sun catcher. We will be offering the Junior Adventure Camp two more times this summer.

We are already looking forward to next week (week 3) and are excited for the opportunity to mentor more young kids. Again, we thank you for your continued support of this ministry.

Let the Fun Begin!

Steve Scott

Well, its that time of year again, time for fun as we welcome dozens of children to camp each week. We have awaited summer all year and are excited, once again, for the opportunity to interact and get to build relationships with kids. This summer, we have tons of fun and exciting camps to choose from whether it be Finding Bigfoot or shooting bows and guns, we have it all!

This week (week one) we had four camps total, in the morning we had Fish On and Intro to Archery, and in the afternoon we had Basic Marksmanship and Search for Bigfoot. All of the kids had an absolute blast! Also, this week was the first Trap Shoot Tuesday camp.

In fishing the kids learned different fishing knots (The Knot of the Day) and caught lots of fish. They even learned how to fillet a fish and enjoyed some deep fried catfish. Intro to Archery was also a success as the kids all perfected their form as well as shot for money and candy. In Search for Bigfoot the kids found Bigfoot, and lit him up with paint-balls! Basic Marksmanship taught the kids safe gun handling skills and they learned to shoot precisely.

The camps that we have going on next week are: Camp .22, Intro to Archery, and Into the Wild: Boys (check the Summer Day Camps tab for more details). If you are interested in signing up your child for one of our camps, we have plenty of slots open!

Also, don't forget every Wednesday night will be our Family Fun nights from 6-8pm where you can come see what your kids have been learning, we will even let them teach you! Activities will typically consist of archery, air rifles, and fishing.

As always, we thank you for your continued support of this ministry! God Bless.
