This winter we will be offering a mentored trapping program at On Target Portage. The main target furbearer is raccoons, although we will be trapping muskrat, mink, fox and coyote. We likely will catch skunks, opossums, woodchucks and probably a squirrel or two. All programs will include field time at Tyrrell Woods as well as cabin time with a devotional.
Additional dates are possible ar other locations...We are looking for other local areas to trap.
Exact dates and times will depend on weather and trapping results
*December 15 1:00-5:00 scouting and setting raccoon and muskrat traps at Tyrrell Woods.
*December 21 10:00-2:00 checking traps and skinning and fleshing if any caught.
*December 22 Time TBD. setting fox and coyote traps and snares
*December 23 Time TBD. checking traps, scouting new area, tanning
*December 27,28,29,30 (dates and times TBD) fleshing and tanning. hopefully starting some coon skin caps
*January 2, hopefully starting some coon skin caps, or beaver mittens
*We anticipate 2-4 additional dates in January as well.
To be in the program they would need to have a warm winter coat, hat and gloves and a tall set of rubber boots. Hip or chest waders would be beneficial, but not required.
The cost for the program is $20. Traps, baits, lures, salt, home tanning solution is included for 3 animals and materials for a coon skin cap per student. If you would like to have additional animals home tanned, or sent to a tannery for a much higher quality tan, that would be additional costs.
